FARIDABAD/December 15, 2023: Amrita Hospital, Faridabad hosted a CME on neuro electrophysiology with a call to boost practical and professional skills for neurology residents, with special focus on nerve conduction study, electromyography, visual evoked potentials, brainstem auditory evoked responses, polysomnography, tremor recording, repetitive nerve stimulation test, and single fibre electromyograph.

Neuro electrophysiology is a specialized field within medical science dedicated to studying the electrical activity of the nervous system. Through diagnostic tests like nerve conduction studies and electromyography, it evaluates nerve and muscle function. Crucial for identifying neurological challenges, these tests provide insights into conditions such as neuropathy, myopathy, myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis, and sleep disorders. The nerve conduction study assesses peripheral nerves, while combined with electromyography, it aids in diagnosing neuromuscular disorders. Evoked potentials contribute to sensorimotor assessment, especially in demyelinating disorders. Polysomnography is essential for diagnosing sleep disorders, collectively enhancing diagnostic precision and treatment planning.

Dr. Sanjay Pandey, HoD, Neurology, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad said,

“This workshop will play a crucial role in fortifying the research endeavors undertaken at the Human Motor Control Centre. Complementing this initiative, the recent launch of a 4-year neuro electrophysiology course within the department holds immense promise. This course is a significant step forward in cultivating trained neurophysiologists, contributing to the pool of skilled professionals in the country. Together, these initiatives underscore the commitment to advancing knowledge, fostering research, and nurturing a cadre of experts to elevate the field of neurophysiology in India.”

Dr. U.K. Mishra, Former Founder Head, Department of Neurology, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, said, “State-of-the-art facilities are integral to the advancement of neuron electrophysiology. Designed to cater to all age groups, these services extend to both adults and pediatric patients. This expansion underscores the dedication to provide cutting-edge medical interventions across diverse demographics, ensuring comprehensive and inclusive healthcare solutions.”

Hands-on training provided to Neurology residents in the field of neuro electrophysiology yields multifaceted benefits. By exposing participants to real-world cases and practical scenarios, this training instills confidence and competence in the intricate realm of neurological diagnostics. The guidance from seasoned experts ensures a robust foundation, enabling residents to navigate the complexities of nerve conduction studies, electromyography, evoked potentials, and beyond.

Dr. M. Gourie Devi, Former Vice Chancellor, National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences during her inaugural address said, “As emphasizing on training neurology residents is the need of the hour, it is important for them to understand the various neurophysiological procedures and their applications in neuro electrophysiology. Equipping residents with these skills ensure comprehensive patient care and facilitates advancements in the field.”

This immersive experience not only elevates individual skills but contributes significantly to advancing the quality of neurological care, thereby shaping the future of neurology professionals.
